How to Tell if Your Coloring Is Warm or Cool

Although there are many different types of complexions, human beings actually only have two different types of skin tones: warm and cool. While you may not think that skin-tone coloring matters, when your coloring is chosen correctly you will appear vibrant, relaxed and refreshed. If chosen incorrectly, you may look tired or drained of color. Once you identify your correct skin tone, you can not only choose the most complimentary makeup, but coordinate flattering clothing and hair colors as well.

Step 1:
Examine your underarms in a natural light. If the veins in your skin appear blue, you have cool skin tones. If the veins have a more greenish tint, your coloring is warm

Step2:
Hold fabric swatches near your face. Earth tone colors, such as orange, brown and yellow typically are a better match for warm skin tones, while blue-based colors and jewel tones compliment cool skin tones.

Step 3:
Note the type of skin that you have. Pale skin, true olive, or dark skin with bluish or red undertones indicates a cool coloring. If you turn golden brown when you tan or have golden undertones, you are warm.
